The Big Sports Arena (BSA) was opened on July 31, 1956 and was the largest stadium in the USSR and Russia. BSA "Luzhniki" is a year-round football stadium with the possibility of holding mass events of a cultural and entertainment nature. The stadium meets the FIFA stadium requirements for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
The reconstruction project provided for the preservation of the existing structures of the facade wall and roof of the stadium, with an increase in the cantilever part of the translucent cover over the spectator seats. As part of the reconstruction for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the preserved walls of the building were cleaned and restored, while the color scheme of the facade remained in the light sand palette familiar to Muscovites and guests of the city. The facade of the BSA was decorated with panels, designed by the studio of Artemy Lebedev, made of perforated metal, which depict competitions in various sports.
In accordance with FIFA requirements, the renovated Big Sports Arena can accommodate 81 000 spectators, which is 3 000 more than it was before. The number of entrances has also increased from 13 to 16. It includes separate entrances for VIP categories, which are located on the western stand.
The roof covering is made of polycarbonate. This modern material transmits the sun's rays and is ideal for natural turf stadiums. To protect fans from precipitation, the roof of the Grand Sports Arena above the stands has acquired an additional 11.5 meter long canopy. A lot of LEDs were installed on the roof of the Grand Sports Arena, which turned it into a huge media screen with an area of 39 000 square meters. It has become one of the elements of the architectural lighting of the building, and during sports matches it shows the score, flags of teams participating in competitions and other information. The media roof is designed with the Russian climatic conditions in mind and will be able to operate at temperatures from minus 30 to plus 50 degrees.
Under the roof space, there is a sports light, which has been updated in accordance with the modern requirements of TV broadcasts. It provides a high-quality picture on TV screens and comfort for those present at the BSA.
The technical solutions adopted in the project ensure compliance with the requirements for BREEAM certification. In January 2018, BSA Luzhniki received the BREEAM Bespoke environmental certificate.
In 2017, the Luzhniki stadium was recognized as the best stadium in the world 2017 by experts from the world's leading stadium database Stadiumdb.com.
The BSA Luzhniki project won the All-Russian competition for environmental development and energy efficiency Green Awards 2017 in the Social Facilities category.
