Reconstruction makes you think and act outside the box
Specialists of Metropolis Ltd. are trusted to reconstruct technically and architecturally complex objects. RECONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTIONS - THIS IS ...
“Reconstruction is a completely different story if we compare it with the design and construction of a facility from scratch on a“ clean ”site. The main difficulties are primarily limited space and decision making. Regardless of the scale of the reconstruction project implementation is impossible without a detailed survey of the building. We receive as the initial data the results of the survey from the customer, if something is not enough, we request additional information.
For an engineer, reconstruction work begins with an examination of the status quo. The more detailed and clearer the picture, the less further surprises can be expected. Lack of information can lead to the fact that it is necessary to redo the work or something to change.
When you undertake the reconstruction of the object, the study of its history is the only correct approach. Such a scheme of work is applicable to absolutely all objects of reconstruction. It is impossible not to take into account and not to know the past life of the object. Even if the building after reconstruction retains its purpose, you still turn to archival materials, photographs, study history to make the right decisions.
GREAT WORK FOR GREAT SPORT
This method of work was in the case of the reconstruction of the Luzhniki stadium for the World Cup. When we first started to work, we studied both the existing structures of 1957, the frame with a roof, built in 1997, and the design of this roof itself.

During the study of the object, it became clear that the structures of the roof were constantly monitored over the years. The observation was conducted by the Institute named after V.A. Kucherenko with the participation of the head of the sector of reconstruction and monitoring of buildings and structures, candidate of technical sciences Mikhail Farfel. Then we got acquainted with the authors of the roof project, which greatly facilitated the understanding of the construction work, its relationship with the building of the stadium itself and what surprises we can expect in the design and construction.
The work was difficult: while preserving the size of the building, in accordance with the requirements of FIFA, it was necessary to ensure all requirements for safety, evacuation, convenience and comfort. Reconstruction makes you think and act outside the box, taking into account a rather complicated, multi-step sequence of actions.
All technical solutions should be optimal. That is why the design of the stadium began with a conceptual approach. Of course, some decisions were born during construction. It must be admitted that many technical solutions of previous stadium reconstructions were literate and technically correct at that time. But we were faced with other tasks, they were completed. The appearance of the sign not only in Moscow, but the whole country has been carefully preserved object, the new sports arena adequately met the FIFA World Cup.
NEW LIFE ON THE HISTORICAL PLACE
- Work on the territory of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex is an example of how the connection between history and modernity is organically and noticeably built. Along with the reconstruction of the sports arena, we were engaged in the design of a multifunctional swimming center, performed all engineering systems and structures. So a new object appeared, whose historical connections were not lost. As a result, an interesting from an architectural and engineering point of view, the project fits well into the ensemble "Luzhniki".
Rhythmic Gymnastics Center is another new facility on the territory of the Olympic complex. The roof structure of the building is made in the form of a flowing gymnastic ribbon. It was necessary to hide most of the communications, while ensuring the microclimate and vital activity of the building, to take complex technical decisions: what materials to use, what would be the appearance of the facades, what should be the layering of the roof, but at the same time keep the perception easy. Successful implementation of any project is the ability of an engineer to think in unison with the architect. The art of an engineer is to find a solution that meets all architectural design, reliability and security. These principles are guided by specialists of our company.
CAUTION: ARCHITECTURE MONUMENT
With architectural monuments, a slightly different algorithm works. The Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow clearly defines which parts of the object should be preserved, controls the progress of work. During the reconstruction of Gostiny Dvor, in which the Metropolis company took part, the task was to adapt the project for modern use, having minimally affected the historical constructions of the object. Difficult, almost jewelry work - to carry out engineering systems, arrange comfortable modern rooms within the boundaries of historical structures, minimally and delicately intrude into the object, so that in the end everything would look organic. Such a difficult job is valuable because a huge array of technical solutions was reworked, the variants of which, if they do not get into the project, but definitely remain in the collection of the experience of engineers.
Priceless experience or encyclopedia for an engineer
Reconstruction is an incredibly difficult job. But such a difficult experience is valuable because you rethink a lot of technical solutions. Each reconstructed object is a library, an encyclopedia, a manual for young engineers. Moreover, solutions have to be found on specialized literature, on books, photos, refer to the history of construction. If you understand how they did it before, in what sequence they built 50 or 100 years ago, then from an engineering point of view, this is often a hint for making the most original decisions. Having passed several projects of reconstruction in his life, the engineer begins to have unique knowledge and experience, and a professional outlook.
