Павел Головин_1.jpgOlympiad 2014 has changed the approach to the design and construction of sports facilities in our country.

Pavel Golovin, the chief engineer of the Metropolis, told about what requirements are imposed on sports facilities, what projects are in demand and can be implemented in the coming years.

To accept international competitions, the Russian design and construction companies had to apply the standards of international sports organizations. For this, foreign consultants were invited to many projects at the initial stages. This gave a great impetus to the development of innovative solutions in the design and construction in our country. And now in new projects, customers are trying to navigate and apply technical and technological solutions corresponding to the level of solutions implemented for the Olympics and the World Cup.

Thus, when designing the Center for Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Wiener Usmanova in Luzhniki, it was taken into account that the arena should accommodate 4 thousand viewers. Of these, about 3 thousand places are stationary reinforced concrete stands, and about 1 thousand more will be located on the so-called “bleaters”, which will be advanced additionally if necessary. For VIP-viewers, there are 80 seats in the sky boxes, where there are separate chairs, as well as places where you can eat and watch performances on screens. There are also special places for the press, a modern press center and rooms for press conferences.

It should be noted that in the state expert examination of sports facilities, already proven technical complex and costly solutions are quickly approved by experts, even at facilities financed from the city budget.

Budget sports

The Olympics influenced not only the quality of the applied technical solutions. International competitions provided an additional incentive to increase the number of sports facilities being built by city funding. Moreover, the specialization of sports facilities is assigned to the most successful sports in competitions. It can be said that the successes of our athletes provide an additional incentive in the construction and modernization of sports facilities.

In addition, in the process of designing objects with urban funding, special attention was paid to the architecture of the building. If earlier most of the city’s sports facilities were typical and unremarkable, now architects are trying to make each project individual and memorable, which causes additional interest from ordinary visitors. Requirements for engineering and technological equipment have also grown.

Public and private

In general, approaches to the construction of sports facilities differ significantly depending on the source of funding. In most cases, narrow-profile sports facilities are designed with budget financing. The construction is aimed at the implementation of a specific sports area. In rare cases, multifunctional complexes with several sports areas are built.

For example, the Indoor skating rink of KP "SK OD-80" Moskomsport. The complex is intended for hockey training sessions and regional level competitions.

Acting as a general designer at the site, Metropolis also acted as the author of architectural solutions. In 2017, the project became a finalist in the BIM technology contest organized by the Ministry of Construction of Russia.

The area of facilities under construction is usually approximately 6,000–11,000 square meters, but sometimes it reaches up to 20 000 square meter. Customer costs for the implementation of projects amount to an average of 75,000-125,000 rubles per square meter. In this case, the design accounts for an average of 2-5% of the value of the object.

When constructing objects with private financing, the further commercial attractiveness of the object plays an important role. Based on this, different sports areas are chosen, if possible, often technologically opposite - for example, a pool with a skating rink. And also an entertainment component is added, which occupies a part of the object's area or allows transforming the main premises of the complex for temporary use, for example, for concerts.

The areas of such complexes already range from 25,000 to 50,000 square meters or more. Customer costs per square meter also increase due to additional equipment, such as multimedia systems, as well as design solutions for interiors with the use of expensive finishing materials. The cost of construction of such objects starts from 200,000 - 240,000 rubles. for the quarter. At the same time, the cost of the design fluctuates within 2-3% of the total investment in the project.

What’s next?

Taking into account the facilities built for the Olympics and the World Cup, we should not expect the construction of new large-scale sports facilities in the near future. At the constructed facilities, we can expect the launch of projects to equip them with additional functions that increase the attractiveness for visitors. As an example, I can refer to the arrangement of territories and park areas around sports facilities, for example, in Luzhniki.

At the same time, within the framework of the city budget policy, local projects for the construction of sports facilities continue to be actively launched and implemented. This trend should continue in the next few years.
