Multi-storey construction of wooden panels CLT

AFK Sistema, the owner of the Etalon Group, intends to build multi-storey construction from wooden CLT panels.

It is cost effective, but it is unlikely to capture the market quickly.

"The main advantage of this building material is environmentally friendly and speed of construction. Creating a CLT plant will allow the company to increase margins in the portfolio due to the production of new high-tech product.", - the company said.

Olga Lyubartseva, chief specialist of the structural design department of the Metropolis company, told Delovoy Peterburg how the use of this technology could be promising. Historically, wood as a building material has a special meaning for Russia. From this material housing construction originates in our country.

Already in the 17th and 18th centuries, high culture, technical and artistic methods of wood processing have been formed. Masters knew and took into account the properties and characteristics, color and structure of various wood species. In many cities, wooden churches, houses, and in the Russian North, even wooden pavements have survived. In the past, the spread of wood was primarily due to the availability and ease of processing of this material. Today the range of building materials is much wider: metal, monolithic or precast concrete, stone, polymeric materials. The choice of a material depends on a number of factors, on the purpose of the future building, the conditions of its operation, the region of construction, the requirements of the customer or the authors of the project to aesthetics.

Traditionally, wood is used in buildings with high humidity – skating rinks, pools, water parks: contrary to conventional wisdom, wood is a material that is more resistant to chemical and biological aggressive environments.

Speaking of wood, it is necessary to mention the ecological purity of this material. Its natural origin makes it safe for humans, and the simplicity and ease of processing make it possible to obtain free-form structures from wood. For this reason, wood is widely used in private construction - in the construction of residential houses and baths.

In spite of all the advantages of this material, it has not received much spread in the construction of apartment buildings until today.

Because of the flammability of the wood, for many years it had limitations on its use, however, modern fire-retardant materials make it possible to increase the fire resistance of structures.

Low weight of wood with relatively high strength and low thermal conductivity - can reduce material consumption, and hence the cost of construction. A 200-mm thick wall has the same thermal conductivity as a 640 mm thick brick wall. And the heavier the construction, the more weight must be transferred to the foundation and the ground, the more massive and expensive the foundation construction becomes.

When choosing city apartments, buyers still prefer monolithic reinforced concrete houses, this material is associated in society with durability and reliability.

At the same time, prefabricated houses are more in demand than monolithic houses, according to most because of the limited freedom of planning. But in fact, a big role is played by the desire to break away from the Soviet past.

With reduced construction costs due to the use of lighter wood constructions, as well as taking into account the current trend for environmental friendliness and a healthy lifestyle, it is quite possible to assume that housing made of wooden structures may be in demand in the future.
